Bijoy Mohapatra, a veteran in Odisha’s political circle, has joined back to BJP on Thursday. He had quit the party in November 2018. His return just before election is seen as a big boost for BJP in Odisha.

“As elections are approaching, we have decided to intensify our campaign and fight unitedly to bring about a change in Odisha by defeating the BJD and to build a new India,” Mohapatra said.

Mohapatra said he had a detailed discussion with BJP Odisha in-charge Arun Singh and party national vice-president Baijayant Panda. The 68-year old leader also had a telephonic conversation with BJP President Amit Shah.

“The priority at present is to further strengthen the organisation to oust the BJD from power in the state,” he added.

Both Panda and Singh welcomed Mohapatra and expressed happiness over the development.

Panda said Mohapatra’s return to the party would boost the morale of the party workers in the state in their fight against the Naveen Patnaik-led BJD.

There is, however, no confirmation if the veteran leader is going to contest the elections. In the 2014 elections, Mohapatra had contested from Kendrapara district’s Mahakalapada Assembly seat on a BJP ticket and lost to BJDs Atanu Sabyasachi Nayak.

The state of Odisha is going for a simultaneous election for Lok Sabha as well as state Assembly. The simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in Odisha are scheduled to be held in four phases on April 11, 18, 23 and 29.
